Butter dish small HB 497A

The butter dish with the model number “497A” by Hedwig Bollhagen is the smaller version of the larger 497B. The butter dishes were designed by Bauhaus ceramist Werner Burri. Characteristic features include the rectangular, flat base, which flares slightly at the edges, and the equally rectangular, bowl-shaped lid. Measuring five and a half centimeters in height and nine and a half centimeters in width, the butter dish is about half as tall as it is wide. Burri addressed the Bauhaus principle of “form follows function” by designing the lid so that it also serves as a base when inverted. This allows the butter to “sit proudly” on the breakfast table, making it more accessible to the whole family. Of course, you can also store liver sausage, cheese, or whatever else you like in the 497A, but one thing is certain: this classic is a must-have on any design lover’s breakfast table.
