The soup bowl by Hedwig Bollhagen, model number “591,” has been affectionately nicknamed the “ear bowl” by the staff at the Marwitz Ceramics Manufactory. The reason for this is likely the bowl’s distinctive elliptical flange, which protrudes about two centimeters outward on each side and also serves as a handle. One thing is certain: with this easy-to-grip rim, no one will burn their hands while serving. Whether it’s broth or semolina porridge, with a capacity of 0.3 liters, this 250-gram soup bowl is also just the right size. Deeper than a plate, flatter than a bowl, this bowl—with a diameter of 16 centimeters and a height of five centimeters—is three times as wide as it is tall.
