Plates by Hedwig Bollhagen
The practical and elegantly shaped dinner plates appear on the lavishly set breakfast table as well as at the coffee gathering on the garden table of the finca. Whether Caesar on the salad plate, borscht on the soup plate, spaghetti on the pasta plate, or apple strudel on the cake plate, Hedwig Bollhagen’s ceramic plates bring variety and good cheer to the table. Hedwig Bollhagen included the series plates in her portfolio immediately after founding the company in 1934. In the ceramic manufactory in Marwitz, Brandenburg, the ceramic artist created numerous plates alongside her sets, jars, and “pots” until her death in 2001. From dessert plates and fondue plates to breakfast and children’s plates, as well as pasta plates, pizza plates, and soup plates — the unique pieces are still handcrafted and hand-painted today according to Bollhagen’s designs and specifications. The ceramicists, some of whom were personally trained by Bollhagen, handle the plates up to 60 times before they are ready for sale.
The plates with appealing decorations bring joy to the table. Handmade, cleaned, painted, and intricately incised with needles, each plate is unique. One thing all these ceramic plates have in common: each dinner plate is designed for a lively, multifunctional use in everyday life. Hedwig Bollhagen’s pottery is very versatile. Because one thing is certain: every plate by Hedwig Bollhagen is a work of art. Whether a dinner set or breakfast plate set, white or colorful dinner plates, floral, striped, or dotted, their timeless aesthetic with all the different, elaborately hand-painted country-style decorations gives each plate that special something.
You can find plates in various shapes, sizes, decorations, and price ranges online in our Hedwig Bollhagen ceramic shop. Are you looking for a limited decorative plate in precious Ritz décor? Or should it be a dinner plate or a deep plate in faience décor matching a specific set? Or perhaps a small, practical dessert plate set for gifting?
Serving Platters by Hedwig Bollhagen
When tapas dreams come true, it looks just like this: chorizo, aioli, Manchego, Serrano ham, and olives—Mediterranean delicacies as far as the eye can see. A sociable evening has no better companion than a colorful appetizer platter, stylishly served on ceramic serving platters from Hedwig Bollhagen. After all, we eat with our eyes. And when stuffed avocados, bacon-wrapped dates, and steamed artichokes are perfectly presented on a decorative serving platter by Hedwig Bollhagen, it’s not just your mouth watering. Tapas are not just about food but also about enjoyment, sociability, and joie de vivre.
Serving platters by Hedwig Bollhagen have been part of the ceramic manufactory’s range since 1934. The ceramic artist created not only serving platters but also cups, jugs, heads, and vases in Marwitz near Berlin. Her focus was on producing "unique pieces in series," made by nearly a hundred employees according to her specifications. Many artists from the Bauhaus pottery also worked in Hedwig Bollhagen’s workshops and influenced her artistic process on site, including Werner Burri, Charles Crodel, Waldemar Grzimek, Heidi Manthey, and Jürgen von Woyski.
HB, the ligature of Hedwig Bollhagen, is today associated by connoisseurs not only with the synthesis of art and craft but also with award-winning ceramics. The first gold medal was awarded to HB at the 1937 Paris World Exhibition. The motto was that art and technology, as well as the useful and the beautiful, do not contradict but complement each other. The ceramic artist always made her stoneware with the motto of combining country house and Bauhaus styles. This principle is still implemented today by the ceramicists, some of whom were personally trained by Bollhagen. The result is equally elegant and functional ceramic art for confident everyday use.
