Many of Hedwig Bollhagen's tins have been part of the ceramics manufacturer's permanent portfolio in Marwitz near Berlin in Brandenburg since the early 1930s. In addition to her jugs, cups and "pots", the ceramic artist also created a whole series of tins here since the factory was founded in 1934, which were either glazed in a single color or covered with numerous decorations. Their focus was on the production of series tableware suitable for everyday use. From butter dishes and jam jars to sugar bowls, pill boxes, bread pots and the legendary cookie tin. "Unique pieces in series" was the motto under which the beautifully shaped earthenware was produced according to Bollhagen's designs by almost 100 ceramicists and painters, including artists such as Werner Burri, Charles Crodel, Waldemar Grzimek, Heidi Manthey, Frauke Gerhard and Jürgen von Woyski. Bollhagen's fine sense of quality and design is appreciated not only by local ceramics fans from Marwitz, but also by international customers from as far away as Manhattan. The ceramic artist knew how to excellently combine both the country house style and the aesthetics of the Bauhaus. The result is beautifully shaped earthenware that is ideal for everyday use. The nostalgic bonbonnière (885) is the pioneer among Bollhagen's tins. First introduced to the range in 1940, the elegant shape was reissued in 2007. The butter dishes as well as the rectangular (861) and round (862) sugar bowls have been an integral part of the ceramic manufacturer's service since 1958. The legendary cookie tins (870 and 875) have been a convincing feature of many interior design concepts since 1977. Also popular are the jam jars (542 and 872), the bread jar and the honey jar, which originated from a children's mug at the end of the 1950s. And then there are the practical jars and miniature jars, pill boxes and tablet boxes (871, 873, 874 and 876). What is unique about Hedwig Bollhagen's handmade and painted ceramic jars is their loving, traditional production. Each clay jar with lid is created in up to 60 steps. Whether roses, blue bees or forget-me-nots, the decorations are first drawn in pencil and then painted with natural hair brushes and self-mixed colors. The additional scoring of the patterns before the first firing process means that the tins with the elaborate scored decorations are among the most valuable in the range.
